Rebooting your computer as often as possible is essential to the health of the machine. When computers are awake for too long, it can sometimes cause the machine to process slower and, therefore, cause issues with access to programs. Hitting the Windows pane icon in the bottom left corner of your screen, then the power icon and the restart button will reset the time clock for your computer and make it run smoother. A simple shut down doesn't always restart the computer's time clock, but rather puts it in a "pause" mode. I recommend restarting your computer once a day to maintain stability.
Certain devices need a software component called drivers to communicate with the computer. For example, if I want to hook my laptop up to a docking station that is connected to monitors, I would have to install drivers to help the docking station and laptop communicate. Drivers can usually be found quite easily on the web by looking up the model of the product you are trying to connect to, followed by the word "drivers". This is not always the case, as sometimes the default drivers your computer already has installed can do the trick, but other devices may require specific drivers or plug-ins.
